Visual design is no longer just aesthetics. It’s evidence of organizational values in action.

This approach guides our design work because when your visual systems reflect your values, they build trust.

A recent brand guide we created for Snuneymuxw First Nation’s Membership Code is a powerful example.

For the branding, our goal was to create a distinct brand identity that felt authentically Snuneymuxw and grounded in the Nation’s culture. We looked to culturally significant objects, particularly the many forms of weaving found in baskets and blankets, and explored how their meaningful patterns could be thoughtfully translated into a contemporary visual language for the Membership Code.

We began with visual representations and references to these objects, simplifying their patterns into geometric forms that became the foundation of the brand. From there, individual shapes could be pulled out and recombined, creating a flexible system that stays connected to the Nation's cultural origins.

Photography became another important part of the identity. By bringing together macro and micro perspectives, alongside ancestral and contemporary imagery, the system reflects the Membership Code at both a community-wide and deeply personal level.

Together, the patterns and photography create a visual language that connects the broader scope of the Membership Code with the personal experiences, histories and identities of the people it represents.

In 2023, we were honoured to support communications and media relations for the Xyólhmet ye Syéwiqwélh (Taking Care of Our Children) project team as they prepared to share preliminary findings from Phase 1 of their work.

The project focused on investigating potential unmarked graves and missing children connected to former residential school sites in S’ólh Téméxw, including St. Mary’s, Coqualeetza and All Hallows in British Columbia’s Fraser Valley, as well as the Coqualeetza Indian Hospital.

While preliminary findings were shared, the significance of this work cannot be measured in numbers alone. It is personal, sacred and deeply connected to the Nations, Survivors, families and communities involved.

Truth and reconciliation require all of us to learn, listen and carry forward the knowledge of what happened in residential schools. Through this work, Survivors are honoured and the children who did not make it home are remembered.

In the lead up to National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, our team wanted to share a few of the resources that we lean on during this time.

Working alongside Indigenous communities, we recognize the ongoing importance of practicing openness, listening and humility. Seeking out Indigenous voices and engaging with Indigenous-led resources is one of the ways we put these values into practice.

We’d love to hear what resources you turn to during this time! Share your recommendations in the comments so we can continue learning from one another and help inspire others to listen and reflect this National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

Trust can’t be rushed; it’s earned through ongoing presence.

For our client, Snuneymuxw First Nation, that meant shifting from episodic media engagement to a more deliberate, relationship-based media strategy.

Instead of only engaging journalists when there was a major announcement, the Nation maintained a consistent presence, sharing context, clarifying priorities and building relationships over time.

From this, media coverage increased and, most importantly, became more accurate, balanced and aligned with the Nation’s long-term community goals.

The difference between organizations that sustain trust and those that lose it, isn’t budget or volume. It’s the discipline to show up consistently, stay true to your values and make space for real relationships.

What’s something that you’ve learned can’t be rushed?
