What is “earned media?”

Simply put, earned media is material written about you or your brand that wasn’t paid for or created yourself. This type of content is garnered through media attention, word of mouth or through organic posts on social media.

Earned media is incredibly effective today as consumers are greatly influenced by their friends and family as well as what they read online.

A successful strategy to generate earned media is created through effective media relations. Want to know how it can benefit your brand? Visit our website at the link in our bio.

We know what you’re thinking: "There’s no way my community organization could get media attention."

We’re here to tell you that yes it can! It doesn’t matter how big or small or how well-known your organization is, getting media pick-up is about the message, the strategy and media relations.

Whether you’re a local community organization that wants to make a big environmental impact, a non-profit focused on helping underserved populations or an Indigenous community reclaiming its culture and identity, your story can garner national media attention.

And we can help. Head to the link in our bio or send us a DM for more information!

Shopping local keeps money in the community, supports neighbourhood character and builds a sense of community.

In June, we shared the exciting news that 50th Parallel PR became B Corp certified, joining more than 7,700 companies in a global movement for an inclusive, equitable and regenerative economy.

Today, we’d like to shine a light on some of the team’s favourite B Corp retailers in Canada. These businesses, like us, are focused on making real, intentional and meaningful change, using business as a force for good.

Swipe through to check out a few of our favourite B Corps.

Today we’re shining a spotlight on Métis mural painter Jesse Campbell (@jesc_art)!

Jesse is of Michif (Métis), Salteaux, Cree, Scottish, and English ancestry currently living in traditional Lekwungen territories. He’s helped to produce public art pieces throughout Greater Victoria and leads his own projects throughout the city.

Jesse also spends time mentoring youth on the craft of mural painting and understanding the diverse forms of Indigenous art across North America.

So, are you ready to send your completed design to the printers? Great! They’ll request a print-ready file – but what does that mean exactly?

“Print-ready” refers to any document that has all the specifications required to print at a high resolution, according to the printers’ specifications. This means the document is ready to go without making changes to margins, design, size or resolution.

There are a number of things that should be done before submitting a file in order to ensure printing goes smoothly. Here are some things to keep in mind when sending a design file to the printers:

1. Confirm turnaround times – How long will it take your printer to get you a completed product?

2. Use the right size – Make sure your document is the same you want your printed product to be. If you’re designing an 8.5” x 11” flyer, set your image dimensions to 8.5” x 11”.

3. Check image and photo resolution – Image quality and resolution is determined by DPI. When designing for print, your designs, photos and images should be set to a minimum DPI of 300 to avoid loss of quality.

4. Convert to CMYK colour – Printed graphics should be set to CMYK colour. CMYK refers to the actual ink colours that will be used to print your design: cyan, magenta, yellow and black.

5. Add a bleed – Bleed allows for your design to go to the edge of the page. Generally, bleeds are a quarter inch which is like adding 0.125” to each side.

6. Proof your work – Thoroughly check your work before you submit it to your printer to ensure there are no spelling or alignment errors and that all information, like emails, websites and phone numbers, are correct.

7. Use the proper file type – Before you submit your file, check with your printer to see what file type they prefer. Many printers prefer PDFs, but depending on the job, a different file format may be more appropriate.

What is a press kit?

A press kit is a page or downloadable document of pre-packaged promotional materials that interested parties, such as journalists, can reference for more information about your brand or organization. It can be printed or accessed on your website. Common details shared in a press kit include: logo, boilerplate, contact information, fact sheet and images.

Check out the reel to see an examples of press kits designed for a few of our clients! We created these kits for the Interior Designers Institute of British Columbia, c̓išaaʔatḥ (Tseshaht) First Nation, the Xyólhmet ye Syéwiqwélh (Taking Care of Our Children) Project, the Te'mexw Treaty Association and Hupačasath First Nation.
