In the PR industry, “messaging” is a constant focus. Over time, it can feel like the work is about shaping a voice to fit a moment rather than hearing the one already present.
At 50th Parallel PR, we approach communications differently.
When we connect with someone, we listen with empathy to both what is being said and what sits beneath it. That way, the work we do can actually honour those at the centre of the story.
Why we listen first to honour voices
Honouring someone’s voice begins with recognizing that it already exists. Instead of it being something we create, it’s something we help discover, support and carry forward with clarity.
Every client brings a set of experiences, values and intentions that inform how and what they speak about. Sometimes those things are fully formed. Sometimes they are still taking shape. In both cases, our responsibility is the same: to meet our client where they are and help them communicate in a way that reflects their truth.
This matters because audiences are paying closer attention to what is said and, in turn, what is done. They are more selective in what they engage with and more direct in what they question. They notice when:
- Language is overly constructed
- A message is disconnected from the person or organization behind it
- What is being said doesn’t match what is being done
How to honour someone’s voic
We’ve learned that our most important work happens before a single word is drafted. It’s often a process of asking more intentional questions:
- What are you accountable for?
- What are you willing to defend publicly?
- What happens if this scales?
- What is not being said internally?
From there, communication becomes an act of translation, not invention. Our role is to support our clients’ ideas so they are consistent across communication channels, reaching the right people without losing their identity.
There is also weight in restraint. Not every moment requires a response and not every message belongs in every space. The right message, delivered wrong, becomes the wrong message.
What this looks like in practice
Consider our work with the Connect Fund, a non-profit organization supporting access to gender-affirming and transition-related care for trans, non-binary and gender-diverse communities in Ontario and Alberta.
They came to us in preparation for their largest fundraising event, seeking various communications support. Our role was to help define what they were asking of donors — and why it mattered. What does a contribution make possible? What changes because of it?
From there, we developed messaging that was clear, grounded and unwavering. Donors could see how their support removed barriers to care, while the materials named the reality people are facing: gaps in access, delays and the consequences of unmet need.
We didn’t soften reality. We made space for it, so the urgency was visible and grounded in truth.
We centred the people at the heart of the work in both language and visuals. Imagery reflected the range of identities across trans, non-binary and gender-diverse communities, grounded in representation that was respectful and real.
The work stayed true to the people it represents, made the ask clear and gave donors a direct way to support immediate change. It didn’t shift the voice — it raised it.
